How to Thrive at OPAC in 2025: Strength, Learning & Community

Welcome to the start of a new and exciting school year at Oran Park Anglican College! I trust that you and your families have enjoyed a refreshing break and are ready for the opportunities, challenges and growth that 2025 will bring.

I shared at each of the sub-schools first assembly how I had started something new in the holidays – exercising at the gym and how it had made a difference to the distance I can now hit a golf ball. For me, going to the gym is a chore, its something I know I need to do but I don’t really enjoy it! I do love to play golf though! However, by putting in the practice to lift weights – starting small and slowly increasing, as I get stronger I can see the improvement in my golf game. It’s the same with learning at school.

Sometimes we just have to slog out the drills and practice routines to develop our skills, but the effort will pay off when we apply our knowledge or new skills to something we are passionate about or when we see real progress in our abilities. Just like my time at the gym is strengthening my golf game, the hard work of learning—whether it’s mastering a math concept, refining an essay, or practising an instrument—builds a strong foundation for future success. Growth takes time, effort and persistence, but every small step forward adds up. My encouragement to our students this year is to embrace both the challenges and the rewards of learning, knowing that their dedication today will open doors to greater opportunities tomorrow.

As a College, we remain committed to our vision to be a vibrant learning community that impacts every member for Jesus, through life-changing, caring, quality Christian education This year, we will continue to build on this foundation through our Strategic Priorities for 2025, focusing on three key areas:

Christian Disciple-Making

We are dedicated to cultivating servant-hearted students and staff who live out Christ-like values in all aspects of College life. With the integration of our two new chaplains, Mrs Gillies and Mr Stevenson, we look forward to strengthening spiritual growth and discipleship opportunities for our community. Our goal is to foster deeper faith and active service, equipping students to make a meaningful impact both within and beyond the College.

Students who thrive Academically

This year, we continue to invest in high-quality teaching and learning by attracting, developing, and retaining exceptional educators. The Building Powerful Learners framework will be a key focus, empowering students to become resilient, critical thinkers who take ownership of their learning. We will also be developing the habits of Powerful Learners through our core values:

  • Courage – Stepping out of comfort zones, embracing challenges, and persevering through difficulties.
  • Curiosity – Asking questions, exploring ideas, and seeking deeper understanding.
  • Craftsmanship – Striving for excellence, refining skills, and taking pride in quality work.
  • Collaboration – Learning and working effectively with others, valuing diverse perspectives.
  • Compassion – Demonstrating kindness, empathy, and a heart for serving others.

Additionally, we are committed to enhancing co-curricular participation and achievement, particularly in the performing arts and other enrichment opportunities that help students grow holistically.

A Caring and Connected Community

Creating a calm, safe and inclusive environment remains a priority. Through the consistent use of restorative practices, we aim to strengthen relationships and ensure that every student feels valued, known, and supported. We also encourage all students to exemplify the College’s values in their learning, interactions, and contributions to the broader community.

As we embark on 2025, I encourage students to set high expectations for themselves, approach learning with curiosity, and embrace the journey ahead with faith and determination. I extend a special welcome to our new students, families, and staff—may you find a warm and supportive home here at OPAC.

I look forward to partnering with you all in a year of growth, service and excellence. Let’s make 2025 a year where we thrive together!

God bless,
