Out of The Comfort Zone and Into Adventure
Welcome back to Term 3, this is a big term for our Duke of Edinburgh Students with Adventurous Journeys in the planning stages. For many, these adventures will be the culmination their Awards and will be an exciting way to experience Gods beautiful creation and develop their navigation and collaboration skills.
In the Term 2 holidays we had two of our Gold Award participants complete their Residential Projects. This is an exciting part of the Award that only enters the program at the Gold level that sees students live away from home for 5 days in the company of people they don’t already know. Students are expected to broaden their horizons, contribute to activities and work towards a common goal.
Tali C and Alyse-Rose M both completed their Residential Projects at Teen Ranch over the break, Tali in the first week of the holidays, and Alyse in the second week. This time away from home saw them help with food service and preparation in the kitchen, learn the ropes of running outdoor activities, and push themselves out of their comfort zones. See below for some reflections from Tali on her time at Teen Ranch.
“During my time at Teen Ranch I assisted with a small high school group from the snowy mountains. Their whole high school consisted of about 25 kids from years 7-10. I helped out with the preparation and serving of food and cleaning in the kitchen. I also helped out with activities such as archery, archery tag, high ropes, giant swing, orienteering and bush skills, some of which included putting the harnesses on the kids, packing away activities or getting involved in them myself. I tried to make the most of my experience there and was looking forward to the challenge of the high ropes course which I especially loved!! The whole experience was a blast with some of my absolute highlights being the campfire at night, archery tag, listening to ‘connect’ and getting to know the kids and staff on camp!” – Tali C (Year 11)
We are extremely proud of both students! It is wonderful to see their wonderful contribution and dedicated service. Well done Tali and Alyse!
God bless,
