This past school holidays, some of our students embarked on a memorable journey to Japan as part of our student exchange program with Tachibana High School. Over two transformative weeks, they delved into Japan’s unique culture, stunning landscapes, and bustling city life, forming bonds with local families and immersing themselves in daily Japanese routines. Through their reflections, it’s clear that Japan left a lasting impression.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Our students saw classroom lessons come alive as they navigated life in Japan. From practicing language skills to adapting to Japanese customs, this journey taught them lessons far beyond textbooks.
“i really liked the Japanese education system and their school had 10 minute breaks in between periods and vending machines.” – Dylan M
“Most students live quite far from their school compared to Australia. When I went to school with my host sister, I had to catch 2 buses which in total was just over 1 hour. However, lots of other students had to ride bikes, walk, and even catch trains just to get to school every day.” – Isabella K
“Then travelling to school and seeing, through the lens of another person’s daily sights, the massive track field, soccer pitches, baseball pitch, and the pool on the top of the 5th floor. This is someone’s reality.” – Isabella H
Through experiences like these, they gained deeper insights into Japanese society, language, and daily life, while also reflecting on the differences in culture and lifestyle.
Cultural Exchange and Friendships
Central to the exchange experience was the homestay, where students connected with host families and experienced the warmth of Japanese hospitality. Many students expressed that this time was one of the most rewarding parts of the trip.
The main highlight for me was the homestay. Living with a Japanese family for a short period of time allowed me to dive into the Japanese culture and experience a different routine which suits their lifestyle. Along, new friendships were made, whilst strengthening my current friendships.”– Alana S
“Yusuke and Kotono were very welcoming to us, and we very much appreciated the hospitality brought by them. The laughter and joy they brought to each conversation will never be forgotten and I cannot wait to see them again.” – Noah J
“My host family took me out every night and took great care of me. Each day my host mum packed my lunch and gave me water. I was able to experience the culture as I tried all the different foods that were traditional in Japan.” – Arneye R
“Personally, I was very anxious about the homestay, but I can now confidently say it was the best part. They were so welcoming and kind to me; I will never forget them. It’s such a unique and special bond that I don’t have with anyone else.” – Jenna M
These close connections with host families and local friends left a lasting impact, creating a unique bond that all students say they’ll cherish forever.
Exploring Iconic Sights and Sounds
Japan’s famous cities and landmarks offered endless discoveries. From the peaceful temples of Kyoto to the thrilling rides at Universal Studios Japan, each place left its mark on the students.
“I got to explore some of the country’s most iconic cities—Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo—each leaving me with unforgettable memories. In Kyoto, I visited the Golden Temple (Kinkaku-ji), a sight that truly took my breath away.”– Emily D
“The Japanese sights were some of the most beautiful thing i have ever seen. The 1000 gates were beautiful and the mountains and everything else.” – Dylan M
“We got to visit a variety of temples whilst in Japan, including the Kinkaku-ji (The Golden Temple), Senso-Ji (Tokyo’s Oldest Temple), Kiyomizu-Dera and the Fushimi Inari Shrine (which has over 1000 Tori gates). Whilst at these shrines we got to learn about their history and observe the beautiful Japanese Architecture.” – Olivia H
Even everyday experiences, like traveling through crowded train stations and exploring new foods, became memorable highlights.
Reflection and Growth
For many students, the exchange was about more than sightseeing—it was a journey of personal growth. Stepping out of their comfort zones to embrace new routines and cultures taught them invaluable life skills.
“The trip was incredible and truly life-changing. loved the trip beyond words and am really looking forward to hopefully going back to Japan someday!”– Jake W
“The experience was exciting as I was going to a different country with no family. My time there was amazing with my host family as they welcomed a new person into their life. I was nervous at first, but their kindness made my nerves disappear. After staying with them, it was sad to say goodbye.” – Archer H
“Japan was a transformative experience that gave us a unique opportunity to grow and develop, and I’ll be forever grateful for it.” – Noah J
“I went into this experience with no expectations so there wouldn’t be any room for any discomfort. Then it ended up being better than I ever dreamed.”– Isabella H
The Japan exchange trip has left a lasting impact, inspiring our students to see the world through a new lens and fostering a curiosity that will stay with them for years to come.
As they returned home, our students carried with them cherished memories and a new appreciation for Japanese culture. They brought back not only souvenirs but also a deeper understanding of global citizenship. Our thanks go to the teachers, families, and everyone who made this exchange possible, providing an experience that will continue to shape their lives.
