In the Music Classroom
Students in Year 8 Music are learning how to play the guitar, bass, and drums as part of the Rock Music Assessment Task. They will form little rock bands and choose from a list of classic rock songs including ACDC’s TNT, Cream’s Sunshine of Your Love and Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust. They will perform in front of the class in Week 9 of this term.
Meanwhile, students in Year 7 are learning about film music. They will sit a listening text in Week 7 and need to study the music written for Star Wars, Titanic, Indianna Jones, and other films. If only we did this when I was at school!
We’re excited for OPAC’s first ever Music 2 class! Our three trailblazers have been delving into Beethoven’s 7th symphony 2nd movement. If you’ve seen the film The King’s Speech, you’ll know the piece (at the end – during the King’s speech!) Students are learning how to read the score and analyse both the micro and macro structures of this masterpiece.
Our Year 4 musicians have started combining to create two larger concert bands and one medium sized string orchestra. They are making some big sounds as they learn how to follow both the conductor and their music! Look out for their annual performance in Term 4.
Upcoming Ensemble Performances
This week our Stage 2, 3 and Senior Choir performed at the annual Choral Festival held at Thomas Hassall Anglican College. We’re very proud of their performances this year.
Next week (Week 7 – 12/6/24) on Wednesday our bands and choir will perform at the Podium shopping centre. You can catch them from around 11:00 am onwards.
Our Senior Choir will lead a congregation at Barry Marsh House Anglican Retirement Village for a traditional service on Tuesday 25th June. Students will present some traditional sacred songs including the spiritual Down in the River which features a three-part harmony.
Our newly created Intermediate Stage Band will make its debut at the end of term Endeavour Assembly. They will perform Herbie Hancock’s Chameleon. The band is led by Mr Rohan Miller, Head of Music Performance. Every student gets a solo!
